About the UEL BSc (Hons) Applied Computing

The BSc (Hons) Applied Computing is a full UK honours degree awarded by the University of East London (UEL) — a London university that traces its roots to 1898 and was named UK University of the Year for Teaching Quality in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025. Through Matrix Institute and the AIMS Campus partnership with UEL (established 2023), you can earn this UK degree in Colombo, without the cost of studying abroad. You graduate with the same certificate as a student on UEL's Docklands campus in London.

The Applied Computing programme is hands-on and career-focused, building practical skills in software development, cloud computing, computer and network security, enterprise architecture and project management — the areas employers value most in the modern IT industry.

Two pathways, one UK degree

Matrix offers two distinct routes to the BSc (Hons) Applied Computing — choose the one that fits your background. Both end with the same University of East London degree, identical to the certificate awarded to on-campus UEL students.

Pathway A — UCSC Route

FIT → DIT → HDIT → BSc (Hons)
  1. Complete FIT (UCSC), 4–6 months.
  2. Complete BIT Level I to earn the DIT.
  3. Complete BIT Level II to earn the HDIT.
  4. Progress directly into the UEL final-year top-up at Matrix — no need to finish BIT Level III.

Pathway B — UEL / AIMS Route

FDHS → DHS → HDHS → BSc (Hons)
  1. Complete the FDHS, choosing the CS1001 computing elective.
  2. Continue with the DHS at Matrix.
  3. Complete the HDHS at Matrix.
  4. Progress into the BSc (Hons) at UEL via AIMS Campus.

Pathway A in detail — UCSC route

Stage 1 — Foundation in IT (FIT)

Complete the FIT programme conducted by the University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC). Duration 4–6 months.

Stage 2 — Diploma in IT (DIT), Year 1 of BIT

Complete Level I of the BIT programme to obtain the DIT qualification from UCSC.

Stage 3 — Higher Diploma in IT (HDIT), Year 2 of BIT

Complete Level II of the BIT programme to obtain the HDIT qualification from UCSC.

Stage 4 — BSc (Hons) top-up at Matrix

Students on this pathway do not need to complete Year 3 (Level III) of BIT. After HDIT they progress directly into the UEL final-year top-up delivered at AIMS in Colombo, earning the BSc (Hons) Applied Computing.

Pathway B in detail — UEL / AIMS route

Stage 1 — Foundation Diploma for Higher Studies (FDHS)

Complete the FDHS programme at Matrix Institute, choosing the CS1001 — Introduction to Computer Science elective for the Applied Computing pathway.

Stage 2 — Diploma for Higher Studies (DHS)

Continue with the DHS at Matrix — the second stage of the UEL pathway, building applied computing knowledge.

Stage 3 — Higher Diploma for Higher Studies (HDHS)

Complete the HDHS at Matrix — the final stage before degree-level study.

Stage 4 — BSc (Hons) at the University of East London

Progress directly into the BSc (Hons) Applied Computing at UEL via AIMS Campus, earning the same UK degree as Pathway A.

Entry requirements

There is an entry point for every background. The simplest way to confirm exactly where you start is to speak to Matrix admissions — but here is the general picture.

Starting the final-year top-up

To join the BSc (Hons) Applied Computing final-year top-up directly, you need a Higher National Diploma, Higher Diploma or equivalent in a computing-related subject — for example the UCSC HDIT (Pathway A) or the Matrix HDHS (Pathway B) — together with English language proficiency.

Starting from school qualifications

After O/L

Begin at the foundation stage — FIT on Pathway A, or FDHS on Pathway B — then progress through the diploma stages to the degree.

After A/L

Enter at the diploma stage of either pathway, shortening your route to the BSc (Hons).

With a diploma / HND

Holders of a relevant HDIT, HND or higher diploma can move directly toward the one-year top-up.

Entry placement depends on your existing qualifications and is confirmed by Matrix admissions. English language requirements apply for the UEL stage.

What you study — final year modules

The UEL final-year top-up takes about one year for students who already hold a higher diploma, and focuses on the applied, industry-ready areas of modern computing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a UEL degree in Sri Lanka?

Yes. You earn the full University of East London BSc (Hons) Applied Computing without going abroad — studying the foundation and diploma stages at Matrix Institute in Colombo, then completing the final BSc year through AIMS Campus, UEL's Sri Lankan partner. Graduates receive the same UK degree certificate as on-campus UEL students.

Where exactly is each part of the degree taught?

The foundation stage, DHS and HDHS are delivered at Matrix Institute in Colombo. The final BSc (Hons) year is delivered by AIMS Campus, the University of East London's partner institution in Sri Lanka.

What are the two pathways?

Pathway A (UCSC): FIT → DIT → HDIT, then progress to the UEL final year via AIMS. Pathway B (UEL / AIMS): FDHS → DHS → HDHS at Matrix, then the UEL BSc year at AIMS. Both end with the same UK degree.

Do I need to travel to the UK?

No. The entire programme is completed in Sri Lanka — the diploma stages at Matrix and the final BSc year at AIMS Campus — with the bachelor's awarded by the University of East London.

Is the degree recognised and accredited?

It is a full UK honours degree from the University of East London, named UK University of the Year for Teaching Quality in the Times & Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025. UEL also holds Microsoft IT Academy and CompTIA Academy status.
