Degree Classification Criteria

  • First Class: Overall Class GPA ≥ 3.70, completed within 6 consecutive academic years.
  • Second Class (Upper Division): Overall Class GPA ≥ 3.30.
  • Second Class (Lower Division): Overall Class GPA ≥ 3.00.
  • Pass (no class): Cumulative GPA ≥ 2.00 with all other pass conditions met.
  • Minimum 90 GPA credits overall, with at least 30 GPA credits from each Level.
  • No Grade Point below 1.00 ("E" grade or below) in any course.
  • A "PASS" grade for every Enhancement course, and at least a "C" grade for the Software Development Project.

Medals & Awards

Prof. V.K. Samaranayake Memorial Gold Medal

Awarded to the student who graduates at the first attempt with the highest overall Class GPA within three consecutive years of first registration, among those who obtain a First Class. Includes a gold medal and cash prize.

Prof. G.N. Wikramanayake Memorial Medal

Awarded for the best performance in the Software Development Project, to the student who graduated with the highest mark for the Project at its first attempt.

Mr. M.J.P.U. Samanthilake Memorial Medal

Awarded to the candidate who has obtained the highest Class GPA at Level III.

How is the BIT GPA calculated?

GPA = Σ(Grade Point Value × GPA Credits) ÷ Σ(GPA Credits attempted). Enhancement (EN) courses are graded PASS/FAIL and excluded from this calculation.

What GPA do I need for a First Class?

A minimum overall Class GPA of 3.70, completed within six consecutive academic years of first registration.

What is the minimum GPA to graduate?

A Cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 across all levels, with a minimum of 90 GPA credits overall (at least 30 from each Level) and no course graded below 1.00 GPV.

Do Enhancement courses affect my GPA?

No — they only need a PASS grade and carry no GPA credit weight.
